ICANN - New Rules For Domain Names

Domain owner rights and responsibilities

Since 01/01/2014, ICANN, the organization managing many domain extensions, is changing its policy concerning the information somebody has to provide if he wishes to register a domain.

More specifically, the new domain's owner should provide complete and valid data about the name or trade name, address, contact numbers and email address.



What changes now?

Every time you register a new domain, you should also follow the steps below:

  1. Once you create the new domain's owner contact and register the domain you are interested in, you will receive an email at the address registered as the owner's contact address, with subject "IMMEDIATE VERIFICATION required for mydomain.com", where "mydomain.com" will be replaced by your domain, the one you have just registered.
  2. The email contains a link, which you should click on to confirm that the information you provided are accurate. This confirmation should be done in a 15 day period.
  3. In case there is no confirmation during this period, ICANN will modify the domain's name servers and replace the site's first page with a page with instructions about how your information can be confirmed and your website recovered.

That was all! Once you have confirmed, the new domain's owner data are considered valid and can be used for future registrations via IP.GR without any further actions! The exact same procedure will be followed in case you modify first name, last name or the email address of a domain's owner.

In case there is a change in one of the following data

- First name
- Last name
- Email

you will have to follow the steps bellow:

  1. If you have changed the email address, you will receive an email with subject "IMMEDIATE VERIFICATION required for mydomain.com", where "mydomain.com" will be replaced by your domain, at the new email address to confirm the change. If you have modified only the name or company name, the email will be sent at the email address you have used in the past.
  2. The email will contain a link on which you should click, to confirm the changes. The confirmation should be done in 15 days.
  3. In case there is no confirmation, ICANN will alter the domain's name servers and replace the site's first page with a page of instruction about how this confirmation can be done and how you may recover your website.

After those steps, any changes made are considered valid and the same information can be used for future registrations via IP.GR, without any further confirmation.

Moreover, all domain names' owners, whose domain names are under ICANN's responsibility, receive every year an email with subject "Important Notice Regarding Your Domain Name(s)", which offers you a chance to go through the information registered for your domain or domain names and alter them, if necessary. In case there has been no change to your information, you may skip this email.
