Phases timeline for new gTLDsHelp
Pre-registration in 3 phases:
Each new gTLD will go through 1 to 3 phases before it becomes generally available.
The first and only mandatory phase is Sunrise All domain names will go through Sunrise, each starting at a different date. This phase usually lasts 30 days for each domain. To register a domain in Sunrise you should have registered your own trademark. Your trademark must be validated by the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). During the domain's registration you will use the unique code provided by the Trademark Clearinghouse.
Registering a domain or more domain names in Sunrise, you will have the chance to protect your brand name from other stakeholders who might want to register it once General Availability (GA) begins for this domain extension.
In case there are more than one registration applications for a domain in Sunrise, the relative Registry has the responsibility to conduct an auction through which the domain will be registered to one of the applicants. The rest of the applicants will be refunded the registration fees.
Second phase is called Landrush and it is optional, which means not every domain has to go through this phase, depending on the decision of the Registry authorized for managing each extension. In this phase anyone may apply for the a domain registration, as long as he intends to pay a little more. Through this phase will go all the popular extensions and it will last 30 days for each extension. If there are more than one registration applications for the same domain name, then the relative Registry will decide to which applicant the domain will be registered, either conducting an auction or approving the first application arrived. There is also a possibility some of the Registries will use another domain registration mechanism and it is a sole responsibility of each Registry. The rest of the applicants will be refunded the registration fees.
Third phase is Pre-registration and most domain names will go through it. Basically, it is your last chance to get precedence for registering a domain. The registration fees while Pre-registration will be relatively cheaper than Sunrise or Landrush fees and depend on the Registry managing a certain extension. Pre-registration may be initiated either simultaneously with the other phases or succeeding them. Just like the phases mentioned, also in this phase it is each Registry's responsibility to decide to which applicant the domain will be registered, in case there are more than one of them. The rest of the applicants will be refunded the registration fees.
