From 4/07/2005 it is possible the registration of names in Greek
characters, like όνομα.gr.
What really registers someone when he registers a domain
in Greek characters is the punycode form of the corresponding
unaccented greek domain. E.g. the domain name όνομα.gr corresponds to
xn--mxavchb.gr which is the corresponding punycode form of the unaccented ονομα.gr
Where only really apply the domains in Greek characters is
at the appearance of the www.ονομα.gr at the bar of the browser program
and only in browser programs that support this ability.
For all the rest applications it must be used its punycode
form. For example, the email address will be the myemail@xn--mxavchb.gr
and not myemail@ονομα.gr the ftp server will be ftp.xn--mxavchb.gr and not ftp.ονομα.gr
etc
.
In the article 3 of the Decision 351/76 of the N.C.T.P, it is described the constitution
of the domain names that can be ceded and the policy of the homographic domain
names, as well as for the forms that result from the combination of the unaccented
form that is ceded, with points of accentuation in different points from them
in the accentuating form that was asked in the application. With the term homographs
we mean the optically similar names. As an example, a homograph name of [ μερα.gr
] is the [ mepa.gr ] and not the [ mera.gr ] because of their optical resemblance
in the capital form.
According to this decision, it is ceded the domain name in the form that was
asked and in the case that this contains accentuation then it is also ceded
at its
unaccented form. If it is about a domain in greek characters or about a domain
name in latin characters, which has homographic form, main form is considered
to be the unaccented form of the cession's application. Consequently, the checks
at the applications from the registry are done as far as this form is concerned
wherever the domain name is reported.
Provided that, from the unaccented form of the domain name, they result homographs
or different accentuations then these names are also committed and provided
that they are activated, they are added in the “Bundle names” of the particular
domain name.
Example 1st :
Provided that the registration of the domain name [ όνομα.gr ] is asked, it is registered the form that was asked [ όνομα.gr ] as well as the unaccented form [ ονομα.gr ].
Automatically, with the registration are committed forms as [ ονομά.gr ], [ όνόμά.gr] (different accentuations) as well as the homographic forms in Latin characters as [onoma.gr], [ovoma.gr].
This forms can be activated provided that the customer asks it in his application. The report to this domain name (in applications of renewal, registrar change etc) has to be to the unaccented form
[ ονομα.gr ].
Example 2nd:
Respectively, if the domain name [ onoma.gr ] is ceded then, automatically, its
homographic forms in Greek characters, as [ ονομα.gr ], [ όνομα.gr ] and
their corresponding homographic forms, as [ ovoma.gr ]. are committed and can
be activated. The report to this domain name at the applications of registration
should be in the unaccented form that resulted from the application for [ onoma.gr ].
