.gr Domain registration General Information

From the 5th of April 2004 the registration system of .gr domains has changed. The registrations, renewals and changes of data for all .gr domains are now done through registrars that act after the relative authorisation of the National Telecommunications & Posts Commission.

The Institution of Technology and Research that constituted the only one registar up to then, stops working as a registrar and is restricted to the maintainance of all .gr domains registrations.
All owners of greek domains are compelled to select one from the officially accredited registrars and transfer their domains there.

The right for .gr domain registration have all the individual or legal persons in Greece and abroad, without any restrictions on the number of names.

A greek domain name in order to be valid should:

• Constisted by alphanumeric latin or greek characters as well as the symbol “-” in the middle of name. It cannot start or end with “-”, or contain contiguous times “-”. There is no difference between small or big letters.
  
• Has length from 3 up to 63 characters.
  
• Not be geographical. Geographical names are registered only by the corresponding authorities of the local government.
  
• Not constitute a country's code as these are described in the list of ISO 3166-1 of the ISO organisation.
  
• Not be registered a .gr domain with the same changeable part under the third level of the .gr domain gov.gr.
  
• Not has been already rejected in the past because:
  
  1. It is contrary to the public order or virtuous morals.
  2. It constitutes a word key in internet.
  3. It recommends a point of the officially greek nation and the remaining nations that are reported to the article 6 of the Convention of Pares about the Industrial property, as well as a point of big symbolic importance, especially religious symbols and words.

Apart from the names of the second level, they are also sold for registration names of third level with the following endings:

1. names with ending .com .gr for companies and commercial organisations
2. names with ending .edu .gr for educational organisations
3. names with ending .net .gr for internet services providers
4. names with ending .org .gr for organisations
5. names with ending .gov .gr exclusively for governmental organisations
