How to install extensions, modules, plugins, templates in your Joomla website?
Joomla is a powerful Content Management System (CMS) and packs a lot of functionality when you first install it. To add even more functionality to your Joomla installation or to change the look of your website you can add elements (extensions, modules, plugins, templates) simply and quickly with just a few clicks.
The first thing you should do if you want to install additional elements is to login to your Joomla website and navigate to Extensions > Extension Manager. There you will find the following four different installation methods:
- Install from web
- Upload package file
- Install from directory
- Install from URL
Each option is presented in detail below.
Install from web
This option allows you to install your new extension directly from the Joomla extensions database. All you have to do is search for the extension you are interested in the extensions page that appears. Once you find the one you want, click the green Install button and then click the second Install button to confirm your selection. Your extension will be immediately installed and you can use it from the Extensions menu.
Upload package file
With this option you can add extensions that you have previously downloaded on your computer's hard drive. These packages are usually compressed in .zip file format.
To upload an installation package click the Choose File button and select the file from your computer through the window that appears. Then click the Upload & Install button to upload the archive and install it. After a while your extension will be installed and you can use it from the appropriate Extensions > (Modules, Plugins, Templates) category.
Install from directory
This installation option is suitable for large extensions that exceed the file size limit allowed by your server to be uploaded through the Upload package file option.
To install a large extension you must first transfer its files (after you export them from the .zip archive) into a new folder on your hosting server via an FTP client or the cPanel > File Manager.
On the Install Directory you need to specify the path to the new folder where you uploaded your files. Then click the Install button to start the installation. If all goes well your extension will be installed and you can now use it from the appropriate Extensions > (Modules, Plugins, Templates) category.
Install from URL
The last available option is to install an extension using the URL of the compressed .zip file that is saved in a server on the internet.
To install an extension the only thing you will have to do is enter the URL address of the compressed .zip file that you want to install on the Install URL field. Then click the Install button to start the installation. If the address you entered corresponds to a correct file then Joomla will install your extension and you will be able to use it from the appropriate Extensions > (Modules, Plugins, Templates) category.
