I can receive email, but I cannot send any. What could be wrong;

There are many widespread applications you can now use for your email management, such as Outlook, Thunderbird, Mac Mail, Windows Live, etc. If you receive messages, but you can not send, you first need to check all the settings for the outgoing email in your application.


SMTP connection settings

The email settings to send messages throught SMTP, vary according to the use or not of a secure (SSL) connection. You can send messages using SSL and non-SSL. In any case, make sure your settings match the following. In place of the domain example.com you will use your own domain.

Connect without using SSL

  1. Incoming email server: mail.example.com
  2. Outgoing email Server: mail.example.com
  3. Username: Your email eg. info@example.com
  4. Password: Your email password
  5. Incoming email port: POP3 110 or IMAP 143
  6. Outgoing emaul port (SMTP): 25 or 587
  7. Use SSL: No
  8. SMTP authendication required
  9. Secure Authentication or SPA no

Connect using SSL

  1. Incoming email server: mail.example.com
  2. Outgoing email Server: mail.example.com
  3. Username: Your email eg. info@example.com
  4. Password: Your email password
  5. Incoming email port: POP3 995 or IMAP 993
  6. Outgoing email port (SMTP): 465
  7. Use SSL: Yes
  8. SMTP authendication required
  9. Secure Authentication or SPA no


Port 25 is blocked

It is also possible that the reason why you can not send emails is that the port 25 of the outgoing email is blocked. Sometimes ISPs may block port 25 without warning. To check if port 25 is blocked or not you can open on Windows a command line (Start > Run > cmd) or in Mac Application Terminal and run telnet as follows:

telnet example.com 25

If telnet is not enabled in windows you can activate it through the path Control Panel > Programms > Turn Windows features on and off > and after you select Telnet Client press OK.

If the telnet command do not return something or return an Error then the chances are that the door 25 is blocked. You can contact your service provider for the reason of blocking or make use of alternative ports 587 or 465 in accordance with the instructions given above. It is advisable to find out the reason of blocking because your provider may block other ports in future.


Change SMTP port and SSL settings

In most email management applications (email clients), the SMTP port and SSL settings are located in the same place, usually under More Settings or Advanced Settings. In this article you can find instructions for some of the most popular applications:
