What is FTP client?

FTP clients are applications we use to manage FTP connections to a server. There is a variety of such applications, either popular or not, such as Filezilla (Windows and Mac) and Cyberduck (Mac).

Some of the most popular applications through which you can manage FTP connections are the following:

FTP applications
  • Cute FTP
  • FileZilla
  • WinSCP
  • Smart FTP
  • WS_FTP
  • CyberDuck
HTML editors which use FTP
  • DreamWeaver
  • Expressions Web
  • Notepad ++
  • Sublime
  • iWeb
IDE
  • Eclipse
  • Netbeans
  • Aptana Studio
  • PHP Storm
  • PHP Designer

Someone can connect using one of these applications in many different ways. For example you can make use of WinSCP application if you want to manage FTPS (secure FTP) connections, but you should have root level login credentials to the server you will attempt to connect. Usually such rights are available on dedicated or VPS servers.

For plain FTP connections, you may either use Security certificate when you login or not, choose among passive mode or active mode, as well as try more specific settings such as the type of transport (ASCII, Binary), the file download or upload speed, etc.
