How can I make my own Joomla website?

To create a website using Joomla is a simple process for anyone who has basic computer skills. In order to have a complete and functional website created in Joomla you need the following 3 things:

  1. domain name
  2. web hosting account
  3. Joomla CMS installation into the hosting package

Find a domain name

The domain names provision is made by domain name registrars. IP.GR is one of the first names registrars authorized in Greece, with many years of experience in the field. See how you can register a domain name in IP.GR.

In case you develop your website locally it is not necessary to have a domain name in your possession at the beginning. But when you want to make it accessible online you will need to register a domain name, by following the instructions in the above link.

Select a web hosting package

IP.GR have web servers to host your Joomla website. In the hosting packages page you can see all the available hosting packages and select one that better fits your needs. Find out how you can obtain one of the hosting packages here.

If you want first to create a website on your computer and not in a real live server, you can install a web server for development in your computer and work through it. For Windows you can use wamp, xampp etc., for MACos you can use MAMP and for Linux you can prepare a LAMP installation. When you are at the final stage of the development, you will need to purchase a hosting package in a real server in order to upload your new website from your computer.

When you become the owner of a domain name you want and the hosting package that fits your needs, you can link them together.

Install Joomla CMS in your hosting package

If you have a hosting package in IP.GR you have 2 ways to install Joomla CMS:

  • Installation with Auto Installer

Every Hosting package in IP.GR has an auto installation script (Auto Installer). With the click of a button you can have a functional installation of Joomla CMS quickly and easily. Follow the steps below:

    1. Login to cPanel
    2. In the Web Applications category click the Joomla portal option.

      cPanel - Web Applications

    3. In the Installatron (Auto Installer) page click the + install this application option.

cPanel - Install Joomla from Installatron

    4. In this step you can set the Joomla CMS installation folder. In the Directory field you can set a subfolder of the public_html folder if you want to install Joomla CMS in a subfolder of your website. If you want Joomla CMS to be the central installation of your account, leave the Directory field blank.

Additionally in the same step you can set the administrator username and a password for the Joomla CMS, make settings about the Joomla updates, and set up email notifications that you will receive from the server etc.

Click the Install button at the end of the page.

    5. The installation is completed in a short time and you can immediately connect to the your new website to configure it..
  • Manual installation

If you plan to buy a template for your Joomla site, first check the files that the manufacturer of template gives you. Usually with the template the entire Joomla installation is provided (full installation template), so downloading the template you have all the files you need to run a complete installation. If you have such a template ignore the first of the following steps and continue to install the file that you have.

    1. Download the latest version of Joomla CMS from the official page
    2. Login to cPanel
    3. Click the File Manager option in the Files category.
    4. In the public_html folder upload the installation file you downloaded from joomla.org (or the full installation template).
    5. When the file finish uploading right click on it and select Extract.
    6. Create a database in cPanel because you will need it during the installation of Joomla.
    7. Open your page from a browser and follow the installation steps.
    8. Once the installation is complete delete the installation folder.

If you have not a hosting package and you make the development locally, then extract the installation file to the folder of your project and follow the steps to manually install as described above. The creation of the database can be done using phpMyAdmin by selecting the Create database option that you will find in it. The remaining steps are the same.
