How do I change the permissions of a folder or file?
Changing permissions to files and folders on your hosting package can either be done using the control panel of your subscription (cPanel) or through the FTP Client with which you can connect to your hosting package.
Change permissions from within cPanel
To change permissions on your website files and folders from within the cPanel you can follow the steps below:
- Login to cPanel

Click the File Manager option in Files category.

In the popup window check the Show Hidden Files (dotfiles) and then click the GO button.

Now you are on File Manager page of cPanel. Through this interface you can make the desired permission changes.
The general rule for file permissions and folders in a website is that folders have 755 permissions and files 644. Unless there is special reason keep your files and folders in these settings.
On the right (Perms) column you can see the current permissions in every file and folder.

To change permissions in a folder or file right click on it and click the Change Permissions option.

In the popup window set the desired permissions and click the Change Permissions button.

Navigate to the folder or file which you want to change permissions and click Right-click on it.
Click the File Permissions button.

Set the permissions that you want the folder/file to have by checking the corresponding boxes.
Click the OK button to save.
