What happens if I fail to renew my domain in time?

A domain name is a service provided by the relative domain names Registry. If the renewal fees are not settled in time, before the domain's expiration date, its function will be temporarily automatically interrupted by the Registry and the domain goes into a new status, which is called quarantine. The temporary deactivation of the domain means that any other service associated with this domain will also be temporarily unavailable (website, emails).

The duration of the quarantine status may vary depending on the domain extension:

  • Regarding .gr domains, if a .gr domain fails to be renewed on time, it will be temporarily deactivated and will be put in quarantine status for 15 days.
  • If a .eu domain fails to be renewed on time, it will be temporarily deactivated and will be put in quarantine status for 40 days.
  • If a .com, .net, .biz, .org, .info domain fails to be renewed on time, it will be temporarily deactivated and will be put in quarantine status for 40 days.

During quarantine period, the domains can only be renewed by their current owner. After this time period time, the domains are released and can be registered again by any person or organization interested.
