How does SSL work?

When a visitor goes to your website, the visitor's browser asks for the SSL certificate of your website and certifies that it is authentic.

Then, the browser validates the certificate, in a manner it proceeds to a "handshake" with your site to ensure that all data exchanged are encrypted.

From this point, all communication between the visitor and your site is secure.
